Simon Cunningham

Simon began his accountancy career in 2001 before qualifying as a Chartered Accountant in 2005. After building experience with firms including Kingston Smith and RSM, he joined Moore South West in 2018 before becoming part of Monahans in 2024 through the merger.

Over more than 20 years in practice, Simon has worked with organisations ranging from owner-managed businesses and international groups to charities, schools, renewable energy businesses, visitor attractions and property companies. While he has particular experience in the education and not-for-profit sectors, he enjoys working with organisations of all shapes and sizes.

Simon believes the best conversations happen when the jargon is left behind. Rather than simply delivering audit or accounting advice, he takes the time to understand what clients are trying to achieve and helps them find practical solutions that support those goals. Having also served as a school governor and charity trustee, he understands many of the challenges his clients face from both sides of the table.

One of the most rewarding parts of Simon’s career has been helping people develop, whether that’s supporting trainees as they progress into management roles or working alongside clients as their organisations evolve. He enjoys getting to know the people behind the business and is often just as happy listening and helping someone think through a challenge as he is providing technical advice.

Simon is a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales (FCA).

Outside work, Simon is a former semi-professional rugby player who now channels his competitive streak into surfing, kayaking and, most recently, taekwondo, which he started with his son. He’s also a keen guitarist and music lover, equally happy playing a few songs himself or heading out to a gig.
