What Stroke Awareness Month means to me: Kim’s story

This May, in recognition of Stroke Awareness Month, we’re sharing a powerful and personal message from Kim Baden, who is bravely opening up about her experience as a stroke survivor…

As a stroke survivor myself (a title I never wanted, but one I carry), I feel the need to use this month to raise awareness within my network.

Before my own experience, I – like many – believed strokes only happened to older people. That changed the moment I heard the words: “Kim, you have suffered an Ischemic stroke.”

They were words I did not truly understand or want to believe. They are also words I hope no one else ever has to hear.

A stroke doesn’t discriminate by age, and the impact can be life-altering. I’m sharing my story to help break the stigma, spread awareness, and hopefully encourage others to know the signs and advocate for their health.

Some facts and figures:

• 240 people will be waking up today with the effects and aftermath of a stroke.
• 100,000 people have strokes each year (10-15% occur in adults under the age of 50)
• There are 1.3 million stroke survivors in the UK.
• British research shows that around 400 children a year suffer from a stroke this covers the ages from 29 days old up to 18 years old.
• A stroke is when the blood supply to part of the brain is cut off, killing brain cells. Resulting in varying degrees of damage to the brain.

Whilst my outcome is extremely positive, I am still recovering and live in fear of this happening again, my balance is re-rooting so often I have dizzy spells, headaches and huge waves of fatigue. I am incredibly lucky I kept my mobility following my stroke!
